Most hand-held cameras are built 'landscape': that is, if you hold them in the way that is most comfortable and natural, they give you a picture in a horizontal format, and if you want a picture in 'portrait' (vertical) format you have to turn them on their side.

Often, though, the two different orientations will give a completely different interpretation of the same subject. And, of course, most publications favour portrait: picture libraries often sell two portrait-format pictures for every landscape format. But the internet favours landscape...
