Udaghamandalam, also known as Ootacamund or just plain Ooty, is the premier hill station of South India. While we were there, we stayed at the former palace of the Maharajah of Mysore, now an hotel. The former ballroom had been converted to a dining room: cavernous, with an embossed ceiling. The Bullet pulls like a train; the steady bomp-bomp-bomp as it pulls up the hill, around the hairpin, accelerating until you have to slow for the next hairpin, is the way a motorcycle is meant to sound. It is said that God rides a Harley, but only by Harley riders; if God is (again as widely believed) an Englishman, He must surely ride a Brough Superior or a Vincent; or possibly both at once, seeing He is omnipresent and omniscient. But if the Lord Shiva can spare time away from the gopis, He must ride a Bullet.
